THE light-car class is a fiercely evolving, cut-throat segment fought out between scores of toddlers scratching for top-spot supremacy.
But while the Barina has sold reasonably well since the sixth-gen version materialised in September last year, Holden has been annoyed that critics haven’t exactly taken the Korean B-segment hatch and sedan to their collective bosom. Enter, then, the evolved MY13 edition …

TM Barina
Released: November 2011
Ended: continued
Family Tree: BarinaA HUGE STEP forward over the old Daewoo Kalos-based TK Barina, the TM series was based on Opel’s Gamma II architecture that underpins (among other models) the Corsa.
Just one model specification was introduced in 2011, powered by a 1.6-litre twin-cam 16-valve variable valve four-cylinder petrol unit producing 85kW of power at 6000rpm and 155Nm of torque at 4000rpm.
The front wheels were driven via a (rubbery) five-speed manual or (better) six-speed automatic. Cabin room, safety and equipment levels all earned bonus points, but the TM’s harsh engine, firm ride and uninvolving dynamics made the Barina a mid-pack player at best.
