SEVEN years after Mitsubishi radically changed direction with its NM Pajero, we have a wide-reaching update that addresses some of the styling challenges presented to some potential buyers, while introducing new engine technology claimed to improve both performance and fuel economy. The restyle certainly brings the Pajero back closer to the mainstream but, for some, it looks a bit overdone. Inside, the NP Pajero Exceed is consistent with its $70,000 price tag and includes the most powerful sound system this side of an Audi S8. At the same time the Pajero continues with its balanced mix of on and off-road ability, as well as seven-seat capacity and a big, easily-accessed load area.

Mitsubishi NM-NP Pajero
Released: May 2000
Ended: October 2006
Family Tree: PajeroThe NM Pajero in some ways preceded the rush to more road-friendly SUVs when it was launched here in 2000 with unitary body construction (for reduced weight), all-independent suspension (for improved ride and road holding) and confronting snub-front, long-back style. But despite its better on-road behaviour, the Pajero was still a dinkum off-roader with adequate ground clearance and low-range 4WD. And the chassis-free body construction allowed maximisation of both passenger and luggage space. Engine capacity grew during its tenure, both in petrol V6 (from 3.5 to 3.8 litres) and turbo-diesel four-cylinder form (from 2.8 to 3.2 litres).
