WHEN it came to giving the Cayman a mid-life facelift, Porsche decided to concentrate on the mechanical package rather than the styling. The result is a car that is hard to pick from the original, which was released only three years ago, but underneath are significant upgrades in the form of impressive all-new engines and an optional seven-speed dual-clutch manumatic transmission, as well as extra features like satellite-navigation. The result is an improved all-round vehicle that not only goes faster but uses less fuel and is kinder to the environment. More than being just a Boxster with a roof, the Cayman continues to shine as a cut-price 911 and, now with extra performance to go with the brilliant handling, ride and steering, further strengthens the Porsche brand.

Family Tree: CaymanPORSCHE gained a raft of new customers by introducing the Boxster convertible, which massively reduced the entry point for the brand, and expanded the brand even further by introducing the Cayman in early 2006. Essentially a Boxster with a roof, the Cayman provided 911 style and handling, with only slightly less outright performance, for a whole lot less money. The company launched the 3.4-litre 217kW/340Nm Cayman S model initially, priced at $148,500, then added the base model eight months later (October 2006) at $118,000 with its 180kW/273Nm 2.7-litre engine.
