Car reviews - Volvo - C70 - Hardtop Convertible rangeVolvo modelsOverviewShorter, cheaper yet better to drive, Volvo’s C70 goes CC in time for summer8 Dec 2006 By CHRIS HARRIS VOLVO has worked very hard to right the old C70 Coupe and Convertible wrongs with the all-inclusive second-generation model, known as the Hardtop Convertible. If you own the old car, you will probably marvel at the dynamic, refinement and quality advances the latest C70 achieves. And the Ford-owned Swede isn’t stopping there, looking beyond luring Saab 9-3 Convertible buyers in the hope of convincing the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 Cabriolet set that this C70 CC has got what it takes. Based on the 1990s 850/S70 platform, the C70 was offered in two turbocharged five-cylinder engine variant – the 142kW/270Nm 2.4-litre 2.4T, mated to a four-speed auto (five-speed from 2000) or five-speed manual, and the tyre-shredding 176kW/330Nm 2.3-litre T5, with the same five-speed transmissions. The press weren’t kind, buyers generally stayed away and Volvo knew it had to try again, withdrawing the model from Oz in early 2004. |
