Jaecoo J7 details firm for Australia

Petrol-powered J7 mid-size SUV a toe in the water for Chery’s upmarket brand, Jaecoo

20 Feb 2025

CHINESE brand Jaecoo – the upmarket division of Chery Motors – is readying its arrival in Australia, announcing details of its first entrant: the J7 petrol-powered mid-size SUV.

Launching from May, and initially in Core and Track grades, the Jaecoo J7 will arrive with a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine driving the front wheels via a seven-speed (wet) dual-clutch transmission.

Power output is listed at 137kW (at 5500rpm) and torque 275Nm (from 2000-4000rpm). Fuel consumption is expected to fall close to the 7.0 litre per 100km mark, and CO2 emissions 163 grams per kilometre.

A plug-in hybrid version is expected to follow later, along with all-wheel drive configurations.

The Jaecoo J7 measures 4500mm in length, 1865mm in width, 1680mm in height, and with 2672mm between the axles.

Boot space is listed at 574-1472 litres, placing the model as a relevant competitor to segment rivals including the GWM Haval H6, MG HS, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Nissan X-Trail.

While the Jaecoo J7 is yet to offer a EuroNCAP or ANCAP safety rating, GoAuto understands the model will be equipped with a comprehensive array of standard safety kit.

Front, side, curtain, and driver’s knee airbags are offered, alongside adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, driver monitoring, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, reversing camera, speed limit recognition, tyre pressure monitoring and more.

Higher grade models add front parking sensors and a 360-degree camera system.

For the entry-grade J7 Core we find equipment highlights including 18-inch alloy wheels (with space saver spare wheel), dusk-sensing LED headlights with auto high beam, LED daytime running lights, LED tail-lights, power folding wing mirrors, faux-leather upholstery, powered front seat adjustment, proximity locking, and remote-start functionality with air-conditioning memory.

These features are joined by a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 13.2-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment array featuring Apple CarPlay (wired) and Android Auto (wireless) connectivity, native satellite navigation, voice control, and six-speaker sound.

Moving up to the J7 Track we note the inclusion of a powered tailgate, rain-sensing wipers, acoustic windshield glass, heated front seats, illuminated vanity mirrors, LED ambient cabin lighting, 50-watt wireless phone charging pad, dual-zone climate control, and an eight-speaker Sony sound system.

Locally, the Jaecoo J7 will be offered in a choice of five paint colours: Arctic White, Carbon Black, Forest Green, Lunar Silver, and Ocean Blue. It is not yet known which (if any) attract a premium paint surcharge.

Jaecoo has yet to confirm pricing, warranty and servicing details for the J7 range, though it is expected the latter will closely mirror those of its sister brand.

Chery currently offers a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty with up to seven years of roadside assistance and seven years / 105,000km capped-price servicing program.

As a guide, the related Tiggo 7 Pro costs between $280 and $368 per maintenance visit.
