Kia EV4 shaping up as Model 3 rival

Kia drip-feeds EV4 details as Model 3 rival shapes up in sedan and hatchback form

13 Feb 2025

UPDATED: FEB 17

KIA has released more details of its all-electric EV4 small passenger sedan and hatchback – first publicly displayed as a concept at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show – ahead of the model’s official unveiling at the Kia EV Day on February 27 with an on-sale date early 2026.

The duo will enter as a battery electric alternative to the recently released petrol-powered Kia K4, with similar styling cues, and provide the market with alternatives to the Tesla Model 3.

Kia says the newcomers were “developed to enhance the appeal of Kia’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) offerings, targeting a broad demographic”.

"The EV4 features a modern design and advanced technologies that resonate with lifestyle-focused buyers who are eager to explore.”

Among the design elements are vertical headlights and daytime running lights, rakish rear glass, elongated vertical tail-lights and aerodynamic design features such as a low bonnet, fastback profile, and “unique” roof spoiler drawn from the brand’s Opposites United design philosophy.

Topping the EV4 range will be a GT-Line variant differentiated to the “innovative” base model by specific design elements aimed at creating a more dynamic character.

Kia says the flagship’s wing-shaped front and rear bumpers provide a stronger, sleeker impression, while the triangular-motif 19-inch wheels enhance the vehicle’s futuristic, sporty feel.

Publicity material from Kia says the EV4 broadens the appeal of its BEV range and embodies a “progressive expression of electric mobility for customers seeking new technology and freedom to explore”.

Both versions of the EV4 are understood to share front-wheel drive architecture with Kia’s EV3 small SUV.

That model, based on Hyundai Group’s E-GMP platform, offers outputs of 150kW and 283Nm drawn from a choice of 58.3kWh or 81.4kWh battery packs.

Should these specifications follow into the EV4, it could become a solid rival to the likes of the BYD Seal, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and ubiquitous Tesla Model 3.

Along with the PV5 people mover and EV2 concept, Kia says the EV4’s debut will help to define its “clear determination to lead global sustainable mobility in the passenger and business sectors to satisfy customers' diverse needs everywhere”.

Kia Motors executive vice president and head of Kia Global Design Karim Habib described the EV4 as a “clear reflection of our commitment to rethink mobility" and that it will “expand the boundaries of what design can achieve”.

“By offering both sedan and hatchback variants, we are bringing to our customers, the unique experience of modernity and practicality that defines the Kia EV family, in a way that suits their varied lifestyles and needs,” said Mr Habib.

“Offering a fresh take on the sedan, the EV4 sedan features a sleek, low nose and long-tail silhouette. The EV4 hatchback is a nimble, versatile all-rounder. Distinctive and clean, it is built to excel in any situation.”

In addition to presenting the EV4, PV5 and EV2 concept, Kia’s leadership team is expected to reveal details of an expanded electrification strategy, which is set to transform the global EV market, at the Tarragona, Spain event.
