The Japanese car-maker did not sell a three-door version of its first-generation Mazda2 hatch and sees the addition as a way to boost volume and attract new customers. It is expected the three-door will give Mazda a chance to offer a lower entry-level price for its Mazda2 range, which currently kicks-off in Australia $16,500. Mazda Australia is expecting to begin selling the three-door Mazda2 around June this year, but is yet to determine the engine or specification levels. Three engines are made available in Europe including a 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre petrol unit as well as a 1.4-litre common-rail turbo-diesel. It is expected the three-door Mazda2 sold in Australia will be powered by the same 76kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder currently used for the remainder of the range.
