Polestar shares first details of compact ‘7’

The European-built Polestar 7 compact premium SUV is set to launch globally in 2027

20 Jan 2025

POLESTAR has announced the first details of its upcoming Polestar 7 compact SUV, which will compete with the likes of the BMW iX1 and Volvo EX30, among others, when it launches in 2027.

To be manufactured in Europe, the Polestar 7 will help the fledgling brand to avoid hefty tariffs placed on Chinese imports when it enters the European market.

Polestar already produces vehicles in China, South Korea, and the United States.

A candidate to replace the Polestar 2 as entry-level model in the car-maker's line-up and is likely to share its platform with the Polestar 4 and other vehicles across Geely’s portfolio of brands including Smart, Volvo and Zeekr.

Polestar said it will gradually move from a multi-platform approach to one architecture, reducing “complexity, costs, and investments”.

The manufacturer currently utilises individual platforms for each of its models, the Polestar 2 riding on Compact Modular Architecture (or CMA), the Polestar 3 on Scalable Product Architecture 2 (or SPA 2), and the Polestar 4 on Sustainable Experience Architecture (or SEA).

“Polestar is known for its progressive design, with each car standing out and creating its own buzz – so too will Polestar 7,” said Polestar head of design Philipp Romers.

“It is incredibly exciting to bring Polestar’s design ethos to a new segment. Polestar 7 will be everything our customers expect from us, both in terms of design and performance.”

It is likely the Polestar 7 will arrive with both single- and dual-motor configurations as per others in the Polestar catalogue. Performance and mechanical specifications yet to be announced.

Polestar says the ‘7’ will help bolster its slower-than-expected global sales, though it is uncertain just how the vehicle’s European production costs will impact affordability in export markets such as Australia.

The Polestar 7 will arrive after the Polestar 5 grand touring sedan – a rival to the likes of the BMW i5 and Porsche Taycan – that will enter production later this year, and the Polestar 6 roadster due in 2026. Both models are already locked in for Australian showrooms.

Claimed to offer peak outputs as high as 650kW/900Nm, the Polestar 5 will be underpinned by a new in-house developed bonded aluminium platform that supports an 800-volt electrical architecture. The sporting model is expected to offer Level 3 or higher autonomous driving capabilities.

It will feature batteries supplied by Korean manufacturer SK On that are said to offer “superior cell technology that offers high-performing chemistry, fast charging, efficient discharging, and superior driving range”.

Meanwhile, the limited-build Polestar 6 aims to showcase the Sino-Swedish brand’s vision for the future of electric sportscars, as well as its design, technology and sustainability ambitions.

The hard-top convertible will be built on Polestar’s bespoke bonded aluminium platform, similar in concept to the related Lotus electric range.

Developed in-house, it will feature a high-performance, 800-volt electrical architecture, outputs of up to 650kW and 900Nm from a dual-motor powertrain, a targeted 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.2 seconds, and a top speed of 250km/h.
