Future models - Volkswagen - TiguanNew-generation VW Tiguan here in MayFive-variant line-up for larger, better-equipped new VW Tiguan dubbed 'mini Touareg’4 Feb 2025 GENERATION three of Volkswagen’s popular Tiguan medium SUV is scheduled to lob Down Under in May, offering a choice of five variants across three trim levels and a trio of petrol engine options.
The range is built on VW’s MQB Evo architecture and kicks off with Tiguan 110TSI Life followed by the 110TSI Elegance, 150TSI R-Line, 150TSI Elegance and tops out with the 195TSI R-Line.
As usual, the numbers refer to power outputs, the 110kW entry level engine being a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol and the beefier 150kW and 195kW figures coming from a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol mill running different tunes, both available with all-wheel drive.
Pricing has not yet been announced, although an increase on the $43,990 (excluding on-road costs) for the outgoing FWD 110TSI Life is expected – although VW Group Australia has been packing in more standard equipment with recent model updates.
Billed as a “Mini Touareg” by Volkswagen, the new Tiguan will enter Australia’s most competitive passenger vehicle segment against the likes of Toyota’s RAV4 from $39,760 + ORC, Subaru Forester from $38,690 + ORC, Mitsubishi Outlander from $37,740 + ORC and the Mazda CX-5 from $36,590 + ORC to name a few.
The new Tiguan’s slightly increased dimensions and overall styling inside and out do move it closer to the Touareg large luxury SUV, which is said to extend to the way it drives and feels due to the materials used and higher levels of technology.
In terms of standard equipment, the entry-level 110TSI Life will have 19-inch alloy wheels, keyless access with alarm, power tailgate, 360-degree parking cameras, digital instruments, a 12.9-inch touchscreen with native satellite navigation, wireless smartphone mirroring and charging, and DAB+ digital radio.
The base model scores more active safety and driver assist tech in the form of Volkswagen’s Travel Assist suite (incorporating adaptive cruise control and lane assist for semi-autonomous and stop-and-go driving), forward auto emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
Additional safety kit on the base model includes side exit warning, front cross-traffic assist, oncoming vehicle braking when turning with swerve support, semi-autonomous parking with steering and throttle/braking control, nine airbags (including front-centre) and road sign recognition lifted from the Touareg and Amarok.
Targeting private buyers, the Tiguan Elegance adds chrome roof rails and trim, rear privacy glass, LED headlights auto high beam and illuminated grille strip, LED tail-lights with illuminated centre strip, leather-appointed seat upholstery, plus front comfort sport seats with power adjustment, heating, ventilation and massage.
It also packs a panoramic sunroof, head-up display and Harman/Kardon premium audio.
Replacing the previous 132TSI and 162TSI 4Motion variants, the Tiguan 150TSI Elegance and Tiguan 150TSI R-Line both run all-wheel drive to clock a 0-100km/h sprint in 7.1 seconds.
Volkswagen says the 150TSI Elegance and 150TSI R-Line appeal to Tiguan customers who love the model for its performance and dynamic appeal.
The 150TSI R-Line will slot in under the Elegance 150TSI with sporty dynamics and a more assertive, edgy character.
It has been the most popular Tiguan specification building on the base model with an R-Line body kit, dedicated 19-inch alloys, LED Plus headlights, premium LED tail-lights with dynamic indicators, sports seats with integrated headrest and sports cloth upholstery, DCC Pro, progressive steering. A panoramic sunroof and Sound & Vision package are optional.
Topping out the new Tiguan line up is the R-Line 195TSI that comes close to the outgoing Tiguan R in performance terms with 195kW of power and 400Nm of torque from a tuned-up 2.0-litre turbo that propels the newcomer from 0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds.
Building on the 150TSI Elegance, R-Line 195TSI is more luxury-focused as well as having dedicated “appointments”, the top model scoring: 20-inch Leeds alloy wheels, leather upholstery, front comfort sport seats electrically adjustable with memory, heating, ventilation and massage, heated steering wheel, 15-inch Discover Pro Max navigation, head-up display, HD Matrix LED headlights, dynamic light assist, premium LED tail-lights with dynamic indicators, Harman/Kardon premium audio and more.
Volkswagen Australia head of product and marketing Nathan Johnson said the all-new Tiguan 110TSI will broaden the Volkswagen customer base again with a dual strategy – a premium focus and a value focus.
“Volkswagen TSI engines have long out-performed several medium SUVs with old-tech engines, and now we can deliver our more refined all-new Tiguan with luxury specification and outstanding customer value.”
“With its ‘mini Touareg’ interior and appointments, the all-new Tiguan proves that value and elevated appeal can coexist – long a Volkswagen hallmark.
“With chassis technologies such as DCC Pro, the stronger MQB Evo platform and 4Motion all-wheel drive, the top all-new Tiguans are unsurpassed in the market for premium appeal, performance and dynamics.
“The steps between 110TSI, 150TSI and 195TSI are clear and ensure the all-new Volkswagen Tiguan offers broad and significant medium SUV appeal, ”Mr Johnson concluded.
