New models - Chrysler - Neon - sedanChrysler sneaks in Neon upgradeA transmission upgrade headlines improvements to Chrysler's small car4 Apr 2001 By BRUCE NEWTON CHRYSLER has quietly slipped an upgraded Neon small car into its dealerships, with a four-speed automatic transmission option replacing the much maligned three-speed. Pricing of the base model SE and upper-spec LE remain unchanged at $23,460 and $26,110, with the automatic option an extra $1090 for the SE and $1500 for the LE. Other significant changes for both models include the addition of a single in-dash CD, a three-point centre rear seatbelt, dark slate grey interior replacing "Agate" and new exterior colours. The LE also gets powered seat height adjustment and new-design alloy wheels. Side airbags are now optional on both models. The four-speed adaptive shift automatic transmission is sourced from the PT Cruiser small people mover, which is powered by a 2.0-litre engine four-cylinder engine similar to the Neon's. The final drive ratio, however, is slightly taller in the Neon, reflecting that it's more than 200kg lighter than the PT. Despite intense media criticism of the three-speed auto, Chrysler Australia spokesman Geoff Middleton said there had been no negative customer feedback about it. He said the four-speed's arrival reflected an upgrade made for the USA. "Most Neon customers wouldn't really notice the difference," he said. "But it will probably provide smoother changes and a small amount of performance improvement." Chrysler Australia is not anticipating the upgrades to make any real change to Neon sales, which have averaged around 65 cars per month for the first two months of 2001. Chrysler's next new model activity will be in May when it launches the latest generation Voyager people-mover, and in August or September it unveils the new Cherokee - which is called Liberty in the United States. Mr Middleton said currency pressures could soon see price rises for Chrysler Australia, as it buys all its cars in US dollars. "The currency issue will be affecting us very soon if the exchange rate does not improve," he said. "We are monitoring the situation."
