New models - GWM - Cannon - AlphaGWM Cannon Alpha PHEV priced for OzTwo grades of GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV available from April, priced from $63,990 d/a12 Feb 2025 By MATT BROGAN GWM Australia has announced timing, specification, and pricing details of its Cannon Alpha Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV), the dual-cab utility model to be offered in two grades priced from $63,990 drive-away with customer deliveries to begin in April.
Pre-orders on the Cannon Alpha PHEV are now open with GWM saying the model will “set a new yardstick in performance, range, and capabilities for electrified vehicles in the utility segment”.
The model promises an all-electric driving range of up to 110km (NEDC), even in four-wheel drive mode, a combined driving range of up to 880km (NEDC), 37.1kWh ternary lithium battery, 3500kg of braked towing capacity, 800mm water fording depth, 224mm ground clearance, locking front, centre, and rear differentials, and total system output figures of 300kW and 750Nm.
On the petrol side of the combination, we find a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and dual-range transfer case. NEDC combined cycle fuel consumption is listed at just 1.7 litres per 100km.
As the second GWM PHEV to enter the Australian market (behind the Haval H6GT PHEV), the Cannon Alpha PHEV offers the brand’s unique Hi4T four-wheel drive technology, allowing the engine to remain in EV mode when high-range four-wheel drive is selected. It also allows EV-only driving at highway speeds, something GWM says is not offered elsewhere in the segment.
The Cannon Alpha PHEV supports DC fast charging of up to 50kW to enable a 30-80 per cent charge time of 26 minutes. AC charging is rated to 6.6kW to recharge in a quoted ay 6.5 hours.
Further, the model offers vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities of up to 3.3kW enabling it to provide AC power to devices and appliances.
The Cannon Alpha PHEV is listed as offering a GVM of 3495kg and with a kerb weight of 2810kg, leaving payload at 685kg.
Content in the new Cannon Alpha PHEV Lux (from $63,990 d/a) will be based on the current Cannon Alpha Lux and includes highlights such as 18-inch alloy wheels, electronic centre and rear locking differentials, LED head- and tail-lights, and a high-mounted tub light.
Inside, we find dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and ignition, dual 12.3-inch infotainment and instrumentation screens, a 360-degree camera system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, front and rear USB outlets, leatherette upholstery, powered front seat adjustment, auto lights and wipers, a self-dimming rear-view mirror, and rear privacy glass.
Standard safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with junction assist, auto high beam, front and rear parking sensors, hill descent control, lane change and keeping assist, rear collision warning, and seven airbags.
Stepping up to the Cannon Alpha PHEV Ultra (from $68,990 d/a) and GWM adds an electronic front differential lock, 60:40 split tailgate, panoramic sunroof, LED fog lights with turning function, a rear sliding window, and auto-folding wing mirrors with memory function.
Internal inclusions add a larger 14.6-inch infotainment array, 10-speaker Infinity audio system, wireless device charging pad front and rear, head-up display, leather-accented upholstery, front seat heating, ventilation and massage function, heated and ventilation rear outboard seats with recline, two-way electric rear seat adjustment, a heated steering wheel, ambient LED cabin lighting, and automatic park assist with reverse assist.
“The Cannon Alpha PHEV is set to redefine electrification in the highly competitive utility segment,” said GWM Australia head of marketing and communications Steve Maciver.
“It delivers advanced EV sophistication without compromising on its strength and capability.
“This is evidenced by true 4x4 off-road performance and class-leading 3500kg maximum braked towing capacity, which remain critical for consumers.”
As elsewhere in the GWM portfolio, the Cannon Alpha PHEV is backed by a seven-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty with included roadside assistance and capped-price servicing. The high-voltage battery is covered for eight years and unlimited kilometres.
