Nissan plans Z-car revival

Pizzazz: Nissan's 240Z concept has strong visual links to the original version of the 1970s.

Nissan is considering reviving the 300ZX badge on a coupe that harks back to the Z-car's glory days

22 May 2000

NISSAN'S 240Z concept car displayed at last year's Detroit motor show will spawn a 3.0-litre, V6-powered production version in 2003, according to respected British publication Autocar.

The production version is likely to embody the same theme as the concept car, which draws its inspiration from the original Datsun 240Z of the early 1970s.

The retro-inspired coupe is expected to be badged 300ZX, denoting its 3.0-litre engine capacity.

Should it get the production green light, the 300ZX may well be offered here, marking the return of the badge after an absence dating back to March, 1997.

The last 300ZX received widespread acclaim for its muscular styling, brisk performance and excellent handling.

A rapid twin-turbo version of the car was never sold here officially, although a number of grey imports can be seen on Australian roads.

The last 300ZX was a distinct step up from its immediate predecessor, which was regarded as a soft, overweight boulevard cruiser.

The next generation 300ZX is expected to offer the sharp dynamics that made the 1990s version a success in several world markets, particularly the US.

Although the 240Z concept car shown at Detroit was powered by a tweaked 2.4-litre, four-cylinder engine, it seems Nissan has decided the production version needs V6 power to endow it with genuine sportscar performance.

Autocar suggests the next 300ZX may use a development of the 206kW powerplant that resides under the bonnet of the Japan-only Nissan Cedric.

Nissan aims to cut development costs by basing the rear-wheel drive coupe on a sedan destined for the US.

It is believed a second generation Z concept may be unveiled at next year's Detroit motor show, retaining the shape of the original version while adding a few detail refinements.

If it is offered here, the 300ZX could be priced around $70,000 in today's oney, pitching it against the likes of the BMW 323Ci and Audi TT Coupe.

The squat coupe is expected to play a key role as an image leader for embattled Nissan, which this week announced a $10.86 billion net loss for the Japanese financial year that ended on March 31.

Nissan erased outstanding pension liabilities, adopted new accounting practices and moved to close plants and cut the number of employees as part of a restructuring program instigated by Renault, which last year took a 36.8 per cent share in the Japanese manufacturer.

Nissan chief operating officer Carlos Ghosn - appointed last year by Renault - has stated his intention of injecting some much needed pizzazz into the Japanese brand and the new Z car is expected to lead the charge.
