Tank 300 payload and towing uprated

GWM uprates its petrol and hybrid Tank 300 to offer equivalent payload, towing to diesel

20 May 2025

GWM has moved to enhance its Tank 300 line-up by offering the same engineering upgrades offered on its recently introduced diesel model to both petrol- and petrol-electric hybrid ranges.

Offering increased payload and towing capacity, the changes are said to deliver greater capability and versatility, “ensuring the full range benefits from these latest technical advancements”, says GWM.

Above the original petrol -and hybrid-powered models, the diesel offered 3000kg braked towing capabilities (+500kg), and a payload of 600kg (+200kg), limits now equalled across the range.

As with the diesel-powered model, the increases in capacity are backed by more than 20 engineering enhancements, including larger front brake rotors and callipers, strengthened front suspension knuckles, upgraded wheel bearings, and a reinforced propellor shaft.

Importantly, the changes will be offered to GWM Tank 300 customers at no additional cost, with pricing for the range still beginning from $47,990 drive-away (see full pricing schedule below).

“These important updates reflect our global team’s growing understanding of the Australian market, where towing capability and payload remains a key consideration for buyers in this segment”, said GWM Australia head of marketing and communications Steve Maciver.

In step with the added payload and towing abilities now offered, GWM announced that it will streamline the Tank 300 range from six- to four variants.

The Tank 300 Lux grade, in both petrol- and hybrid configurations, will be discontinued to “align with a shift of customer preference towards diesel”, says GWM.

All Tank 300 variants remain backed by GWM’s comprehensive seven-year/unlimited kilometre new car warranty, seven-year roadside assistance plan, and seven years of capped-price servicing.

On the market since March, GWM says the Tank 300 diesel now accounts for two-thirds of all model sales.

Year-to-date sales figures show the Tank 300 has sold 1278 examples, a decrease of 11.6 per cent on the same time last year.

The figure places the GWM Tank 300 in tenth place within the Large SUV under $80K segment behind entrants that include the Toyota LandCruiser Prado (10,674), Ford Everest (7220), Isuzu MU-X (4142), Kia Sorento (3284), Subaru Outback (2917), Hyundai Santa Fe (2141), Toyota Kluger (2125), Mitsubishi Pajero Sport (1787), and Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace (1355).
